The A-Shape Barre
The A-Shape Barre is a little trickier than the E-Shape Barre and I myself found it difficult to shift to this chord shape smoothly in the early days. However, through various technical exercises I have become more proficient at it over the years. Below are two examples of technical exercises I have found useful in improving the A-Shape Barre.
1. This approaches the problem of creating the A-Shape Barre from a rather indirect angle. The study focuses on holding the third and fourth fingers in a fixed position while stretching between the second and first, a technique which is useful in creating a good A-Shape Barre.
2. This is a short exercise which can be repeated as many times as necessary. This study focuses on shifting smoothly into a full A-Shape Barre with clean fingering and a comfortable hand position.
